ASO Keyword Research: The Complete Guide

Apple doesn't tell you which App Store keywords are worth chasing. This guide explains how to estimate keyword difficulty, traffic and opportunity from public data — and how to pick terms you can actually rank for on iOS.

Why keyword research matters for ASO

Most App Store installs start with a search. The keywords in your app's title, subtitle and keyword field decide which searches you show up for. Targeting terms that are too competitive wastes your limited metadata; targeting terms nobody searches wastes it differently. Good research finds the middle.

Difficulty: how hard is it to rank?

Difficulty weighs the incumbent apps ranking for a term: their rating volume (on a log scale), how many put the keyword in their title, average star rating, market maturity (app age), how concentrated the top ranks are, publisher diversity, and how crowded the field is. A thin field or a weak brand-name leader lowers it; a dense field of high-rated, title-matched incumbents raises it.

Traffic: how much demand is there?

Traffic blends the top app's popularity, how contested and deep the field is, and title-match density — discounted for long-tail (multi-word) terms. It is a relative demand proxy from 5–100, not a measured search count.

Opportunity: demand you can win

Opportunity is traffic gated by difficulty. A high-traffic term you can't rank for scores low; a rankable term with real demand scores high. It's the single number to sort by when prioritizing.

A practical workflow

  1. Seed from your app and competitors — mine candidate keywords from titles, genres and descriptions.
  2. Score each keyword by difficulty, traffic and opportunity per storefront (country).
  3. Shortlist the high-opportunity terms with few title-matched incumbents.
  4. Place the winners in your title and subtitle (highest weight) and the rest in the keyword field.
  5. Track your ranks over time and iterate.

Treat the numbers as guidance

All of these figures are heuristics computed from Apple's public iTunes Search API — directional guidance for prioritization, not Apple-reported measurements. Use them to compare keywords, not as absolute truth.
