What Is ASO? App Store Optimization for iOS

App Store Optimization (ASO) is the practice of improving an app's visibility and conversion in the App Store — the app-store equivalent of SEO. Done well, it is the cheapest, most durable install channel you have: it compounds instead of resetting every time you stop paying.

Roughly two-thirds of App Store installs start with a search. ASO decides whether your app shows up for those searches, and whether the people who see it actually install. Everything else — paid ads, PR, virality — pours users into a funnel that ASO either widens or wastes.

The two halves of ASO

Visibility is getting found. On iOS this is driven by the keywords in your title, subtitle and 100-character keyword field, plus your ratings and download velocity. It determines which searches you appear for and how high.

Conversion is getting the install once you are found. This is driven by your icon, screenshots, preview video, title and ratings — everything on the search result and product page. A high ranking with poor conversion just shows your weak listing to more people.

Both halves matter, and they feed each other: higher conversion lifts your ranking, and higher ranking gives conversion more impressions to work on.

The three numbers to prioritize by

You cannot optimize everything at once, so ASO comes down to picking the right keywords. Three numbers do the prioritizing:

Sorting your keyword candidates by opportunity is the core of practical ASO. Chase the terms you can win, place them in your highest-weight fields, then track whether the change moved your ranks.

How long ASO takes

Metadata changes can shift rankings within days. Conversion improvements and ratings compound over weeks. ASO is not a one-time setup — it is a loop: research, place, measure, repeat, and re-check per country as markets shift.
